Reality set in! Paul Hamm hadnt just won a medal, he had just won the Olympic Gold Medal in Mens Gymnastics! I truly believe that Paul went out there to do his very own best that night. And, Pauls routine was beautiful! It was flawless! HE COMPLETED HIS ROUTINE A VERY DIFFICULT ROUTINE WITH SUCH PERFECTION!Īnd when it was all done everyone knew hed done it he would be on that stand as a bronze medal or silver medal winner! He had come all the way from the bottom at the beginning of the night to earning an Olympic medal!Īnd when his score was posted his expression was priceless. What would you do? Would you choose the easier routine in life, just so you wouldnt have to be embarrassed by falling again? And Paul himself had made one of the biggest mistakes it was just too much! He would have to do his most difficult routine in order to even get enough points, and then he would have to do it without any mistakes. Too many others were making mistakes under such pressure. He needed a 9.7 something just to even medal.
In the last event the horizontal bar he was the last to compete for the night. He gave every single event after that mishap his very best every single time he was up! AND THEN THE BEST JUST THE BEST THING HAPPENED! But he kept going out there with his head held high AND had such focus! Not a sign of embarrassment or regret (and I was looking for it!) He competed like nothing ever happened. I watched him the rest of the night, feeling very sorry for him. Everyone was talking about him everyone was looking to him to bring home the American Gold Medal! Everyone had HIGH expectations for this 21 year old from Wisconsin!!!Īnd guess what happened! HE BIFFED - BIG TIME ON THE VAULT! On the first round! He practically landed on the judges at the end of his vault! What an embarrassment! What a terrible thing to happen! What a big time bummer! Now, I dont know about you, but I truly thought he was done! And I think most of us would have given up at that very moment! The announcers were even saying things like, WOW Its very doubtful hell even medal at this point! I believe he was in 12 th position after that down at the bottom there was just no hope!!!
